Eternal Nacht and Josele

The song "eternal" from the game Cafe Enchante has my heart and soul in a vice. I always thought it had the perfect vibes for Nacht and Josele which was cemented by @lyranova editing together this video.

(By the way, the art Lyra used in the video was something I commissioned from @crazycookiemaniac.)

And since I was feeling especially in love with my ship today, I decided to sit down and try my hand at translating the song. It's rough and probably not the most coherent translation but I love it.

The art, the sound of the song, the meaning of the lyrics, and most of all my ship. I love it all!

Now here's the translation I came up with:

So the most common word in one of my current drafts is "Lucette" which makes sense. It is the name of the main and POV character of the fic. 😆 It appears 75 times.

The second most common word is "Klaude," the name of the other main character of the fanfiction. His name comes up 68 times.

8) if you had to write a sequel to a fic, you’d write one for…

Oooohhhhh. Aaaahhhh...

This question is tricky because I have a lot of oneshot fics that do have the potential for continuation. Like my Silva reconciliation fic. Right off the top of my head, the sequel fic could be a 3-chapter piece where Noelle has some bonding time with each of her siblings, but it's awkward because none of the elder siblings know how to interact with Noelle in a casual, let alone affectionate, way.

But honestly, I think I might try to write a sequal for Wedding March. That fic was the lead up to Morgen and Josele's wedding. So a sequel fic would be the actual wedding (and possibly honeymoon). And I do have some ideas for what the wedding would look like. It'd obviously be an au where Morgen doesn't die too.

28) your least favorite part of the writing process

Coming up with so many ideas and having multiple WIPs open but no motivation to touch any of them. That's not active writing but it's part of the process and UUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHH! DREADFUL TIME!

All right, so I have news for anyone who's interested in my Jewsade/Jewish dæmonism stuff! After not doing anything with it since I've hit a wall with no idea on how to actually write it, I am now considering using Maharal of Prague as a framing device that could connect the story to the main characters of His Dark Materials. Maharal is most well known for having rumored to have created a Golem - it's actually the most famous Golem story to exist - but he was more interesting a person than that. He was well studies in Philosophy and Kabbalah, as well as Astronomy and various other sciences. He was born in Poland about 30 years after the Alhambra decree in Spain, meaning he was a baby/young child at the time the supposed Jewsade may have occured. He was known to have conversed with Emperor Rudolph II later in life. In addition, his teachings later influenced the Chassidut movement.

I'm not really explaining his significance well, but he is an important figure who had the Golem legend grow around his character and fights against Blood Libels centuries after his death. And the fact that the Alethiometer was supposedly invented in Prague at around the time of his death helps.

You see, my idea of it currently is something along the lines of: Lyra, in the midst of studying the Alethiometer, finds some vague references to an early scholar named Long Loew. There is only one note from him which is very interesting, but there's very little about who he was and what are other stuff he said. After researching she finds a book that explains a bit more about him, which might be the heart of the story. That, or she'll slowly uncover hints and the story will progress in two parallel lines - one telling of the life of Rabbi Yehuda Loew of Prague and his struggles with the rising power of the Magisterium and another about Lyra uncovering his life and learning about the current state of Judaism under the Magisterium-dominated Europe. It will likely include some throwaway lines about the Jewsade and its outcome and about shifts in centers of Judaism. Some spotlight might also be given to Rabbi Mordechai Yaffeh (but only because I like him. He doesn't seem to have interacted with Maharal much even though he also served as the Rabbi of Prague for some time while Maharal was living in another city) and to some of Mahahral's students. There will also have to be some talk about the Shulchan Aruch and such books, but that's another thing.

Part of the idea here is also to remind people that Jews were involved in scientific development, to a degree. Some famous rabbis had exchanges with famous Astronomers. Due to how a Christian-dominated world generally works, though, you're unlikely to find discoveries made by Jewish scholars around the 16th-17th centuries. At least so I think, I'm far from an expert on that topic. Either way, I think this kind of story might lend itself easier to write. It does lose the angle of focusing on Sepharadi Jews, but I'm hardly qualified for that anyway. I think Maharal's type of philosophy might work very well with dæmons and the Alethiometer, though I do need to study it more (which I guess makes the fact one of my distant great uncles was a scholar of Maharal very convenient). I do still need to read the Secret Commonwealth to understand adult Lyra better and see how such a story might work - for example, might Pantalaimon go alone to the Jewish quarter of Prague when Lyra is unwilling to? What would each of them find out? What could really drive Lyra to check out one particular scholar? So, that's the bad news: after having a hard time starting to read the Secret Commonwealth, any progress that might be done is postponed until after I read it. I do intend to try and do it quickly, though.

So, yeah. I intend trying to talk about Jewish life in Lyra's world through the eyes of an old Jewish Rabbi, Philosopher and Kabbalah student, or maybe two or three of those. I will need to thouroughly research their history, but that's going to be fun (hopefully). Plus, I'm descended from Maharal! So this is kind of uncovering family history!

First up, Magna x Luck!

Makes sense. Compels me.

Magna and Luck's characters have circled each other since the beginning of the series. They're always challenging each other. They want to be strong for the sake of (fighting) the other. Luck is disappointed when Magna doesn't have enough mana for Mana Method. And he's excited when he sees Magna come up with a brand new way to fight. Magna is the one to comfort Luck is a moment of fear and weakness. It makes sense since they're so often put together for interactions.

I wasn't always compelled by this ship but more time with the series and seeing more fan works for the ship made me really get invested in it. They're devoted to one another in a comically destructive way. It's lovely and wonderful. They should have a wedding yet forget to be legally married because that's their vibe.

The ship we’ve been cooking up in secret! Tee hee!

Mostly makes sense but partially doesn’t. Compels the heck outta me!

It only partially doesn’t make sense in the fact that it requires a specific AU to exist for the two of them to end up together! 😭

But the rest of the ship makes total sense! Their parents are bffs so they’d likely get plenty of playdates together growing up. It also makes sense because they match energies! Valerian is eager and confident. Daisy is sassy and bold. They wouldn’t feel smothered by the other nor would they feel like they need to pull each other out of a shell.

What interesting is that the ship compels me because of the fact that they only exist within a specific AU. They are a love that only is in specific circumstances and when those factors align, they find each other and fall in love! I also like how instead of a plant magic paired with Earth Magic (because it’s easy to pair plants and the soil they grow in), Valerian has Wind Magic. A small subversion but I like it!

I’d talk about the ship more but I don’t wanna reveal too much while answering for the ask game. Should probably make a proper post about Valerian and his situation in the future…

Katniss Everdeen and her complex links to cats

Never thought I’d write an entire essay on Katniss and cats, but here we are.

I got this idea from the fact that the male lead of my other favorite series His Dark Materials, Will Parry, has a cat Daemon. (It basically means his soul takes on the form of a cat and I think it might be the same case with Katniss.) He was compared to and linked to cats throughout the story. The same goes for Katniss and she has such a cat-like personality when you think about it.

I also got inspired by a stray cat who suddenly scratched me lightly when I was playing with it. It was getting along with me so well, but scratched me with absolutely no warning and got back to being friendly and purring in an instant. That reminded me of Katniss.

We all know how Katniss hates cats and cat-like creatures, specifically Buttercup and the lynx who was following her around the woods. They both had complex relationships with her as well. Buttercup had a reason to distrust her, yet they were the only ones who could really feel the loss of Prim the same way, so Katniss found comfort in Buttercup at the end of Mockingjay. The lynx was trusting Katniss for no reason and she was conflicted about it because she’s protective in nature and she hated she had to hurt it, but she did it for survival anyway.

This is true of Katniss’ relationship with herself in a way. She tries not to argue for herself ever and lists all her imperfections constantly.

Of course, her relationships with cat-like creatures is not the only thing linking her to cats. She has a very cat-like personality, especially when she interacts with Peeta.

People familiar with cats would tell you that with most cats, even when they act like they don’t give a shit about you and even avoid you, they actually take notice of the humans around them and when you’re kind to them, they’re drawn to you by default. They may try to act indifferent, but it shows.

It’s exactly how Katniss is in her relationship with Peeta. She tries so hard to convince herself that she isn’t drawn to him and doesn’t need him. But when she’s at her most vulnerable, she trusts him and wants him around.

For instance, when she hurts her ankle in Catching Fire, she trusts Peeta to understand what happened and leans on him for support. He in turn delivers a brilliant performance for the peacekeeper and understands that Katniss was hurt while the others are oblivious, even her family. When she’s under the influence of sleep syrup and at her most vulnerable, she’s finally willing to admit she wants Peeta to stay and hold her, even when moments earlier, she was like, I choose the rebellion and Gale. And when they’re on the train to the Quarter Quell, she finally lets herself get loose and initiates an intimate hug. She doesn’t want to let go and is annoyed when they’re interrupted. She’s practically purring when touched by Peeta because she feels safe with him. That’s so cat-like.

These are so cat behaviour to me. It also makes sense that I see a lot writers giving Katniss lines like “I’m not good with words, I work better with actions.” Yes, she’s like that and that’s very cat-like. And with cat-like people, when they get attached to someone, they don’t let go. This is also part of why Will reminded me of Katniss. He literally goes through a bunch of worlds in search of Lyra after losing her. Katniss is like that with Peeta. When she loses him, she’s inconsolable. She’d do anything to get him back.

Last but not the least, Katniss’ name is also very similar to “cat”. I’ve seen quite a few people’s head canons with other character nicknaming her “Kat”. Once you make the connection, you can’t unsee it.
